The Best Music In Dallas, Just Listen
Dallas Texas - Randy McAllister and Mike Morgan took the stage in the room at the top of the stairs in the historically elegant, Sons Of Hermann Hall in downtown Dallas along with Sonny Collie on bass and Matt Woodburn on guitar. This evening extended the Sons of Hermann Hall tradition of amazing concerts one more night in it's over 100 year history. Rarely has so much talent shared the same stage. Grammy nominee, Randy McAllister's soulful, rich voice was a constant reminder that McAllister's music is more than notes and words. He loads his compositions with the life he's lived, rich with emotion, experience and celebration. With the hall full, the ensemble played a steady stream of McAllister compositions with some rockin Mike Morgan tunes sprinkled in for variety like "I Feel So Good". The audience was even treated to a great Matt Woodburn tune that echoed with a woodsy howl of the powerful voice of Woodburn. Matt can really sing.
Randy McAllister delivered a stunning exhibition on harp early in the concert with his powerful "Esperanza" that left the audience in breathless awe quickly followed a series of harp featured tunes that proved his "Best in Texas" title had to be an underestimate of his capabilities. Harp playing only to be eclipsed by his vocals this night. Randy delivers a soul snatching bass to tenor range with a richness that will cause you to grab your chair as if you hit an air pocket flying at 10,000 feet. Never, have I seen dancers so totally stunned that they honestly forgot their steps, stopping to witness a dumb-founding guitar spectacular. And so went the evening until Randy took his sticks to the stage and wooden steps making the Sons of Hermann Hall vibrate with the rhythm of his "It's a Texas Thang". The highlight of the night was a new tune that stole the show, if that's even possible, McAllister's "Good Day" was like breath of fresh hope. The concert started with "Take Me Out of New Orleans", with other tunes including "Make Shift Molly", "Why", "Brother Bob's Church and Casino", "When I Get Home", and "Close Your Eyes" to mention just a few, This singer/songwriter is an absolute master of Texas Style Americana/Roots/Blues.
Mike Morgan is a legend, a deft right and lightening fast left with an ear for the perfect string. Mike defines Dallas style roots rock with some of the best guitar solos you will ever hear. In Mike's hands, the guitar and the man become one inseparable instrument, a second voice with unlimited range. Mike not only is a rock star, he plays better than any in the business. His guitar solo's are 3 dimensional. Dynamically played point and counter-point, stage rattling, hard rockin roots contrasted by subtle pianissimo machismo. Mike Morgan easily defended his legend status.
Matt Woodburn was dialed in. His fingers were flying like he was playing for life itself. Incredible, awe inspiring guitar solos that stretched beyond imagination all the way to inspiration. The style? His own. Original. No classic rock poses. Just flat out exhibition of heat on metal strings.
Sonny Collie, the often unheralded bass is incredible. His vocal contribution, stage presence, and the strings. It's not often you see a bass that plays with the experience and skill that can keep up with a Randy McAllister. His vocals were a perfect compliment to the McAllister, Woodburn, and Morgan sound. But the bass solos were incredible thunder punching stand-outs.
If you missed this concert, you missed the performance of a lifetime. This concert was worth 5 times the ticket price. Randy McAllister, Mike Morgan, Mat Woodburn and Sonny Collie played Dallas the same night as Jerry Lee Lewis. It was hard to miss the irony. Jerry Lee Lewis was in town and he probably missed the best show of the night. It was a $12 ticket at the Sons of Hermann Hall. He would have loved it. -
